In what ways does your media product , use develop and challenge forms and conventions of other products ?
The first convention we adhered to was the use of a female ballet dancer in our video , this convention has been used many times in R&B , This convention has been used by various different artists such as Beyonce and Tinchy strider videos . Ballet dancing has romantic connotations and engages female viewers especially when as in our piece the artist is male . The dancing is not sexual as in other genres but is more emotionally based.
The second convention we stuck to was the shots we used , The most prominent shots in R&B are the mid shot and the low angle shot these are important because the artist is very important in r&b videos and these shots show the artist in a dominant role , another reason why these shots are very important and why we decided to stay with this convention is because R&B songs are often very emotive and mid shots are very important because they are close enough to see the artists face and far enough away to see any hand movements or expressive body language that often plays a part in these sorts of videos
A convention we have developed is the convention of clothing , there are two main clothing conventions and these are a smart casual style encompassing a fitted suit without a tie and with the top button undone this is usually used after the artist has had some success , the second costume convention is a more rugged urban style comprising hooded tops , jeans and trainers it is indicative of the poor routes of R&B , the development
of this convention that we used was to combine both these styles , we did this by combining typical urban wear such as trainers and baseball caps with s smart jacket , the reason we chose to combine these two styles was that our artist is at a transitionary point in his life he has not yet become a star but is tasting the first pieces of his success .
The second convention we developed was the theme of using washing the colour out of the music video , we were inspired to develop this convention after seeing Drake and Rihannas video entitled take care , we liked the effect this had and took it into our own music video , the development of this convention was that our entire video was edited to look washed out and that there was slightly more colour to our peice , we did this because the lighting on our location was poor and if the colouring had been the same the overall aesthetic would have been compramised .
The first convention that we challenged was the story line , specifically the choice of performers , our video was a story about success and the narrative part of the video ran parallel to the artists own journey through adversity to success the convention we challenged was that we had completly different performers whereas normally the actor in the narrotive would be similar to the artist in our case they were completly different our artist was male and black and our narrative performer was female and white.
The second convention we challenged was the song choice , most r&b songs are about romance and love we have instead gone for a rare r&b song which is about success ,
